How to connect ChatGPT to WhatsApp

Connect ChatGPT to WhatsApp with Automata, a free, open-source MCP server. Pair your account, choose the chats ChatGPT can see, and add a custom MCP server in five steps.

ChatGPT can summarize, search, and draft replies for your WhatsApp chats, but only once you give it a way in. The way in is an MCP server. MCP (the Model Context Protocol) is the open standard that lets an AI app call outside tools, and ChatGPT can add any MCP server that is reachable over HTTPS.

This guide connects ChatGPT to WhatsApp using Automata, a free, open-source WhatsApp MCP server. ChatGPT supports custom MCP servers with either OAuth or no authentication, and it cannot attach an Authorization header. So instead of a bearer key, you use Automata's path-token endpoint, where the connector token is part of the URL and still limits ChatGPT to the chats you allow.

What you need

  • A WhatsApp account. Use a spare number while testing, because unofficial clients carry some risk of rate limits or bans.
  • A ChatGPT account on the web that can add custom MCP servers. On Business, Enterprise, and Education plans, an admin may need to allow it first.
  • Automata, either hosted at mcp.getautomata.app (no server to run), or your own instance with a public HTTPS URL. ChatGPT connects from OpenAI's servers, so localhost will not work. For self-hosting, the quickest option is the one-click Railway template; you can also self-host with Docker.
  • About ten minutes.

How the connection works

Three pieces are involved, and only the middle one is new:

  1. ChatGPT is the MCP client. It sends requests to a URL and shows you the tools it finds.
  2. Automata is the MCP server. It checks the token in the URL on every request, enforces which chats are allowed, and exposes the WhatsApp tools.
  3. WhatsApp is paired to Automata as a linked device, so ChatGPT never touches your phone or your account credentials.

Because the permission check happens in Automata and not in the prompt, ChatGPT cannot talk its way into a chat you did not allow. Read more about how Automata enforces permissions.

Step 1: Deploy Automata

Choose hosted or self-hosted and make sure you can open the Automata dashboard over HTTPS. If you are starting from scratch, steps 1 to 3 of How to connect WhatsApp to Claude walk through deploying, pairing, and choosing chats. They are identical for every client, so this guide only covers what is different for ChatGPT.

Step 2: Pair WhatsApp

In the dashboard, create a WhatsApp connection and scan the QR code from WhatsApp → Settings → Linked devices → Link a device. Wait until the connection shows as connected, and let the history sync finish so ChatGPT has messages to search.

Step 3: Choose the chats

Open the connection's permissions and decide what ChatGPT may do. Start narrow:

  • Give read access to one or two chats you actually want summarized.
  • Leave write access off for now. You can add it later for a single chat.

Anything you do not allow is invisible to ChatGPT, not just discouraged.

Step 4: Add it to ChatGPT

Create a connector token for ChatGPT and copy its path-token URL. It looks like this:

https://your-automata.example.com/mcp/<connector-token>

For hosted Automata the host is mcp.getautomata.app. Then, in ChatGPT on the web:

  1. Open Plugins (in some accounts this is Settings → Apps). If you see a Developer mode toggle under Settings → Security and login, turn it on first.
  2. Click the plus button and choose to add a custom MCP server.
  3. Enter the name Automata WhatsApp and a short description such as "Read my allowed WhatsApp chats".
  4. Paste the path-token URL as the MCP server URL.
  5. Set authentication to No authentication. The token in the URL is what Automata checks.
  6. Accept the warning that custom servers are not verified by OpenAI, then create the app.

ChatGPT lists the tools it found. Automata only registers the tools your token allows, so a read-only token shows fewer tools than one that can also send messages.

Step 5: Test it

In a new conversation, pick the Automata app from the + menu (in developer mode, choose Developer mode and select the app). Then be explicit about which app to use, and start with a safe, read-only request:

Use the Automata WhatsApp app to check the WhatsApp connection status.

Then move to prompts that match the chats you allowed:

  • Use Automata WhatsApp to list my chats, then summarize what changed in the Suppliers group since Monday.
  • Find the delivery date the supplier confirmed and quote the message.
  • Check my allowed chats and list any action items I promised but have not completed.
  • Draft a reply to Client A confirming Thursday. Do not send it.

When a prompt does not trigger the tools, add "Do not use any other tools" so ChatGPT does not answer from memory instead.

Keep it safe

  • Start read-only. Add write access only for the chats where you want ChatGPT to reply.
  • Keep confirmations on. ChatGPT asks before calling write tools. Read the message it is about to send, and avoid choosing to remember approvals for a conversation unless you trust the whole thread.
  • Revoke per client. Use a separate token for ChatGPT so you can revoke it without breaking Claude or any other client.
  • Watch for prompt injection. A message in an allowed chat can contain instructions aimed at the AI. Keep write access narrow so a bad message cannot do much.
  • Keep a spare number for experiments and avoid bulk or unsolicited messaging.

Troubleshooting

SymptomLikely cause and fix
ChatGPT cannot reach the serverThe URL is not public or not HTTPS. Use your deployed Automata URL, not localhost, and make sure the path starts with /mcp/.
ChatGPT reports a 401 errorThe token in the URL is wrong, expired, or revoked. Create a new connector token and update the URL.
ChatGPT asks you to sign inAuthentication is set to OAuth. Edit the app and choose No authentication.
Fewer tools than expectedThe token only allows some tools. Raise the permission on the chats you need, then refresh the app in ChatGPT.
ChatGPT answers without using WhatsAppThe app was not selected for the conversation. Choose it from the + menu and name it in your prompt.
A chat is missing from the resultsIt is not allowed on this token, or it has no stored messages yet. Check the chat permissions and your history sync.
Sending is refusedThe WhatsApp account is disconnected, or the chat does not have write access. Re-pair the account or raise the permission.

More fixes are in the troubleshooting guide.
